The Wild One

1953 1 hr 19 min

Known as the original outlaw biker film, THE WILD ONE stars Marlin Brando as the brooding Johnny Strabler, leader of the Black Rebels Motorcycle Club. After causing a ruckus at a local race, the Black Rebels are kicked out of town and become embroiled with a rival gang. Meanwhile, Johnny starts to become interested in the local police chief’s daughter. Featuring a powerful performance from Brando, this taut black and white drama oozes tension and rebellion in every frame.

About the Fashion: Brando’s Johnny became an archetype for the rebellious youth in 1950s America. His haircut, featuring long sideburns, inspired both Elvis Presley and James Dean to style their hair in a similar way. Dean also bought a Triumph motorcycle in honor of Brando’s Triumph in the film, and Elvis adapted aspects of the look for JAILHOUSE ROCK. Marlon Brando’s leather jacket with an asymmetrical zipper was adopted as quintessential bad boy greaser style, and was immortalized in Andy Warhol's silkscreen Marlon, an image of Brando in that leather jacket while straddling his motorcycle. The piece sold for $23,714,500 in November 2012.

Costume Designers: THE WILD ONE had no accredited costume designer. Legend has it that Brando chose items for his wardrobe on his own to help him live as the character. Walter Holscher served as the Art Director for the film and likely had a hand in the costuming. Register here ››
